The goal of the StepUP project is to develop new solutions and technologies to support the application of building renovation processes that significantly contribute to reducing energy consumption and help achieve the EU's objective of creating a decarbonized building stock by 2050. Currently, only 1% of buildings in Europe are renovated annually, and typically renovations still have a low impact on reducing energy consumption.
The StepUP project developed new technologies and solutions that make building renovations more attractive and affordable. The project promoted an iterative, deep renovation approach, which minimizes performance gaps, reduces investment risks, energy prices, and indoor environmental quality through continuous feedback and data-driven information systems, thereby improving comfort. The goal was to accelerate renovations and make them more cost-effective.
The StepUP team applied a multidisciplinary approach, combining expertise from various fields to ensure the desired outcomes. The consortium members included technology manufacturers, building owners, contractors, researchers, designers, measurement and verification experts, as well as consultants specializing in business modeling and financial innovation.
StepUP developed new solutions to make renovations more attractive and cost-effective, such as a "plug & play" façade. The project also developed new data intelligence solutions and financing models that help optimize energy, comfort, and cost efficiency. In addition, it applied HeatVentors' Intelligent Thermal Battery for thermal energy storage and flexible use.
The StepUP project successfully contributed to the development of sustainable and efficient building renovation technologies, which not only facilitate market application but also promote energy efficiency and green building solutions, thereby supporting the achievement of the EU's environmental goals.
